An Committee of the
Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce

Leadership Watertown is a successful program created in the mid 1990's to address the issue of leadership within the many boards and committees of the community. At that time it was noted that a number of long serving citizens were retiring and the question arose "Who will lead the people of Watertown into the future?"

The chamber was strongly supported in its effort to organize a leadership program. The result of those early efforts is a strong, self sufficient program which networks well in the community.

Leadership Watertown is governed by a separate board which reports to the full board of the chamber regularly. It has a complete set of bylaws. Much of its operation is overseen by the Executive Director of the chamber. It has an operating budget and has income and expense lines on the full operating budget of the chamber. It was originated as a source of non dues revenue.

Time Frames:

Terms: Persons serving on the Leadership Board of Directors are placed via two sources: Three are elected from each graduating class and open positions are appointed by the Leadership board. Leadership board members have three year terms and may seek one renewal. They must have a one year break from service and can submit their names again for consideration.

Meetings: Those wishing to serve must be able to attend a full board meeting once a month, usually one hour long. Typically it is held on the second Friday on the month. Additional meetings are created by work on subcommittees and special projects on an "as needed basis."

Typical Tasks:

Over all: Watch and guide program development.

January - August, All board members recruit students for next term.
Sept. - May, Board members help to facilitate one or two class days.

Note: Leadership Watertown Board and Alumni cover two complete shifts for the chamber Riverfest booth.
